BYD Shark 6 DMO: The Farm Pickup I’ve Been Dreaming About

BYD Shark 6 DMO Aurora White Pickup Truck

It’s been almost a year since I first reviewed the BYD Shark 6 DMO and I believe it’s time to look back at my desire for this pickup.

Is it still the one I want?

BYD Shark 6 DMO Aurora White Pickup Truck

You can damn well bet that it is!

Now, while my wife wants the Sealion 6 DM-I for its beautiful looks and color. My vehicular desires always tend to drift towards those that can be utilized for work first or can serve as a small, personal, people-carrier.

It’s either go big or go micro for me.

The Shark 6 DMO belongs specifically to the go big category of vehicles.

What is it?

The BYD Shark 6 DMO is BYD’s first electrified pickup truck, built on their Dual Mode Off-Road (DMO) platform, blending rugged utility with plug-in hybrid technology.

It rides on a robust ladder-frame chassis engineered for both durability and serious off-road performance.

The Shark 6 DMO is a showcase of surprising technology, safety, and power in a compelling package that boasts thrilling on and off-road performance, ready whenever and wherever you are.

At ₱2,388,000 for the Advanced variant… it’s a significant investment but I think its ability to function as a proper working farm vehicle with a spec sheet as long as your arm, justifies that number.

Powertrain

The Shark runs on BYD’s Super DMO system with AWD powered by two permanent magnet synchronous motors… one on each axle.

The front motor delivers 231ps and 310Nm of torque.

The rear motor delivers 204ps and 340Nm.

Combined system output is 435ps and 650Nm of torque through the dual-motor AWD setup, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 5.7 seconds.

The 1.5T high-efficiency generator keeps the 29.6kWh BYD Blade Battery charged, giving you 100km of pure EV range for daily on-farm driving and a combined range of 600km when you include the generator’s fuel range.

That’s a conservative figure.

For farm use specifically, most of my daily farm activity happens within a relatively short range.

Checking on animals, moving equipment around, running supplies between different parts of the property.

Sometimes I won’t need a vehicle entirely unless I expand our territory by a significant amount of hectares. Hectarage?

In theory, if I were to operate the truck on pure EV mode… I’d be  doing all of that silently, without burning any petrol, without engine noise spooking the animals, and without adding fuel cost to the daily operating budget of the farm.

The generator would probably just kick in when I go further out… the drive from home to the farm, the trip to town for supplies, the occasional longer haul.

And with the aforementioned 600km of combined range, I’m not stopping at a gas station every other day.

More Boring Numbers

Towing capacity: 2,500kg. That’s enough to pull a loaded farm trailer, a small equipment carrier, or a boat if I ever get around to that hobby…

Wading depth: 700mm. Seven hundred millimeters. That means I can drive through water up to 70 centimeters deep without worrying. Stream crossings, flooded farm roads during the rainy season, waterlogged access paths after a heavy downpour… the Shark handles all of that without drama.

Ground clearance: 230mm. Higher than most pickup trucks in its class. Combined with the double wishbone suspension both front and rear (not the usual MacPherson and leaf spring setup most trucks use), this thing should absorb rough terrain without punishing the driver or the cargo.

Payload capacity: 1,200 liters of bed space. Enough for a serious load of supplies, harvested produce, equipment, feed bags, whatever the farm needs moved from one place to another.

Curb weight: 2,710kg on a 3,260mm wheelbase, measuring 5,457mm long and 1,971mm wide. It’s a proper, full-size pickup… ‘nuff said.

AWD That Actually Does the Thinking for You

What makes the DMO system different from a conventional 4WD pickup is the precision of the torque delivery.

Traditional 4WD systems lock both axles together and let you manage the rest manually. The Shark’s dual-motor AWD can send torque to exactly where traction is needed, independently, on each axle, in real time.

The BYD Shark 6 DMO is equipped with a distributed traction control system and an anti-rollover control system, both of which enhance its overall performance off-road.

On uneven farm terrain, on slopes, on loose soil or gravel… that level of intelligent traction management is very useful.

It’s the difference between a truck that can handle rough ground and a truck that’s smart enough to know how to handle any type of terrain.

Tech

The Shark 6 DMO is equipped with BYD’s DiPilot technology, which includes a 360-degree camera system with see-through mode and a 6-sensor radar system. On a working truck that frequently has to reverse into tight loading areas, back up to trailers, and navigate through farm gates… a 360-degree camera with see-through mode is not a luxury. It’s practical.

The interior won’t be as plush as the Sealion 6 my wife wants, but it’s still well-appointed for a pickup in this class. Comfortable enough for daily use, durable enough for farm conditions, and with enough tech to make long drives between the farm and the city genuinely pleasant.

The Shark 6 DMO has a 5-star ANCAP safety rating, which matters when the vehicle is also going to be used for family trips or highway driving.

How It Compares to What I’d Otherwise Buy

My current reference for a capable farm pickup in the Philippines is something like the Toyota Hilux or Ford Ranger. Both are proven, both are trusted. But neither of them offers 650Nm of combined electric torque, 700mm wading depth, AWD that thinks for itself, and 100km of daily silent EV driving for farm use.

While the Shark 6 may be very different from familiar diesel-powered pickups, the all-wheel-drive system, 700mm wading depth, and payload capacity gave it enough similarities for owners to consider it a serious working truck.

At ₱2,388,000 for the Advanced… it’s more than a base Hilux but comparable to or less than a fully specced Ranger or top-trim Hilux. And it comes with a hybrid powertrain, smart AWD, and farm-ready specs that neither of those offer.

As far as farm pickups go, this is the one I keep coming back to.

  • Smart.
  • Capable.
  • Strong.
  • Tough.
  • And quiet.

It’s exactly what I’m looking for.
